Western powers are waging a transcontinental war on terrorism against what they consider an atavistic cult of Islamic extremists. Those extremists, according to US political leaders, resent cultural decadence and the education of women. But what if Western militaries employ tactics so desperate, so callous that they serve as a feedback loop prompting blowback and revenge?

In his documentary “Dirty Wars,” Jeremy Scahill, a reporter for The Nation, takes viewers around the world to the pit stops in that long war: Yemen, Afghanistan and Somalia. There, he explores the secretive tactics employed by Joint Special Operations Command and poses profound questions about a president who can kill citizens without trial.
