8th Grade Test / Exam in 1895 America

This is the 8th grade final exam from 1895 from Salina, Kansas. It was taken from the original document on file at the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, Kansas, and reprinted by the Salina Journal.

Imagine a college student who went to public school trying to pass this test today, even if the few outdated questions were modernized. This gives the saying of an early 20th century person that "She/He only had an 8th grade education" a whole new meaning!

This test is the original eighth-grade final exam for 1895 from Salina, KS. An interesting note is the fact that the county students taking this test were allowed to take the test in the 7th grade, and if they did not pass the test at that time, they were allowed to re-take it again in the 8th grade.

GRAMMAR (Time, one hour)

3. Define Verse, Stanza, and Paragraph.

4. What are the principal parts of a verb? Give principal parts of do, lie, lay, and run.

5. Define Case. Illustrate each Case.

6. What is Punctuation? Give rules for principal marks of punctuation.

7 - 10. Write a composition of about 150 words and show therein that you understand the practical use of the rules of grammar.

ARITHMETIC (Time, one hour)

1. Name and define the Fundamental Rules of Arithmetic.

2. A wagon box is 2 feet deep, 10 feet long, and 3 feet wide. How many bushels of wheat will it hold?

3. If a load of wheat weighs 3942 pounds, what is it worth at 50 cts. per bu., deducting 1050 lbs. for tare?

4. District No. 33 has a valuation of $35,000.
What is the necessary levy to carry on a school seven months at $50 per month, and have $104 for incidentals?

5. Find cost of 6720 lbs. coal at $6.00 per ton.

6. Find the interest of $512.60 for 8 months and 18 days at 7 percent.

7. What is the cost of 40 boards 12 inches wide and 16 ft. long at 20 cents per sq. foot?

8. Find bank discount on $300 for 90 days (no grace) at 10 percent.

9. What is the cost of a square farm at $15 per acre, the distance around which is 640 rods?

10. Write a Bank Check, a Promissory Note, and a Receipt.

8. Mark diacritically and divide into syllables the following, and name the sign that indicates the sound: Ball, mercy, sir, cell, rise, blood, fare, last.

9. Describe the process by which the water of the ocean returns to the sources of rivers.

10. Describe the movements of the earth. Give inclination of the earth.

Outcomes Based Education and its offshoots have wreaked havoc with the potentials of the youth of many countries. There is some stuff written by Edward Ross-Adams which is very accurate and provocative. I have obtained permission to quote it. I trust you all find it interesting.

Written in protest at the intentional destruction of all worthwhile education in many countries under the guise of improvements and betterment, intended only to destroy the ability to think and halt all progress, industry and technological developments in those countries. Part of a spiritual war because the architects believe “man is an animal”.

The education system is actually a complete portrayal of MISEDUCATION in every country where OBE and all its offshoots have been introduced.
A political party is merely the visible edge of ‘a gang’ intent on their profit. The profits are accumulated by betrayal and social manipulation.
The current education is 100 times worse than it appears and as it appears it is reverse education. Bright and potentially capable people are reduced to unthinking hopelessness. At its heart is a complete disregard for the concept that a person, any person can and should be enabled to be the most they can be.
Education in South Africa and many other countries is a tool, utilized unfortunately, for the brainwashing of the populace. The manipulators aim, being to compel, and obtain peaceful, subservient citizens who comply with political wishes.

The perpetrators have blood on their hands, the blood of the hopes and aspirations of several generations of youth, from whose minds a hope and desire for jobs, the chance for a better forward life, have been violently ripped.

Our education is in the hands of social scientists and psychologists whose interests lie in behavior modification; for political and economic interests. The problem of government is that advice and information given to government is slanted to suit vested interests; government purportedly unknowing (without any excuse) then acts on this and adopts a cultural warfare program such as OBE as education.
The purpose of cultural warfare being to destroy and remove all vestiges of culture and compel the creation of the global citizen.…….. a thoughtless 'zombie' who can be made to "clap hands" or otherwise perform, when you ring a bell, just like Pavlov’s dog.

Even the dictionaries in use today have meanings removed from them; they are shortened to make it "easier", but actually there is little to no real learning.

Basics and fundamentals are not taught at all but are avoided.
Any Teacher who pushes them gets gradually winnowed out and only those who faithfully tow the company line are kept.

From bottom to top SOUTH AFRICAN EDUCATION is not education at all, it is the training of mindless people. People who are oriented by brainwashing techniques; become incapable of thinking clear and or complete thoughts. (and so it is in other countries under OBE education and its offshoots).
By juggling and cover-ups, students are passed who actually do not comprehend and understand - but they have a certificate.
It is a horror.

To obtain real education one first has to examine motives. All the talk that goes on from top to bottom is about skills development. What skills development ... there is NONE.
Our Education is about indoctrination. What indoctrination? ……. the indoctrination of false ideas and beliefs into the minds of our youth, thereby destroying family values and judgment of morals, and the values of right and wrong.
It does not require a rocket scientist to know that it is FROT education. Look at the society. We have large numbers of the people who get arrested, in many western countries, who are then found to be on drugs. Job seekers cannot perform. The ROT is at the top. If our higher education is so good, then things in the society would be getting solved.
What is being "taught" is FROT, the people who have degrees and certificates from Universities can talk the talk and walk the walk.... perhaps for one of these brainwashing TALK SHOWS, but they cannot deliver education that brings about comprehension and understanding on the part of the student.
ONLY when there is comprehension and understandings does the door start to open to ability and capability to do and apply. Our Education system cannot do these things, it has been subverted, to such an extent that it celebrates its own stupidity.

Our schools and places of learning are being used to convert students into patients. The schools are now clearing houses, preparing students to become patients. How does this work? The student is led round and round the garden bush and then finally gets a certificate, but then he or she cannot perform because they do not comprehend and have no fundamentals. What they do have is problems with esteem and problems of behavior and stress and concerns about poverty, food security, HIV AIDS, and issues that all focus their attention on becoming victims in a NEW SOUTH AFRICAN SOCIETY, which manufactures victims.
The manipulators need victims of all kinds, they must be produced so as to justify more and more demands and begging for aid. Criminals always want something for nothing. The real crime here, is our education is creating criminals, because it creates people who cannot do the things needed to produce and earn those things which they hope and dream of.

Through it all, who profits? The ones who have sold their souls for a quick buck and the company line... what company line ... the politically correct company line of socializing everything and molding and compelling citizens and potential citizens to become ... what we are getting ... useless, incompetent, low esteem, people who are ready to be patients or clients of Victim aid programs. This is the Psychiatrist and his political masters at work utilizing psychology and sociology as tools to deliver MISEDUCATION as a military cultural warfare tool, applied in a civil context to secure economic and political objectives.

All the major countries of the world have used these techniques at different times; it is just a matter of who the target is. (Such is the input of Psychiatry and psychological warfare).

MISEDUCATION is a tool of psychological warfare. The target is the youth of South Africa. The purpose to incapacitate the ability to reason or think, thereby bringing the population into a frame of reference by which they can be steered at will.
What is and has been done is a crime against humanity. Words utterly fail to describe the travesty.
